New York CNN —The Dow broke past the 40,000 threshold Thursday morning for the first time ever, fueled by an encouraging inflation report. It also highlights a notable contrast between sentiment on Wall Street and Main Street. Dow 100: The Dow first closed in triple digits in January 1906. The Dow nearly matched that in 2017, rising 25%. Dow 30,000: Nov. 24, 2020: Covid sent the stock market plunging in the spring of 2020.

AdvertisementThe market should be careful what it wishes for when it comes to rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. Ed Yardeni, a longtime market veteran, has warned of a stock market "meltup" if the Fed were to cut interest rates this summer. High interest rates on risk tipping the economy into recession, but lowering rates too quickly risks a resurgence in inflation, which could slam American consumers. Fed officials have said they're looking for more evidence inflation is on track to fall to its 2% price target before mulling rate cuts. AdvertisementFor the most part, investors aren't expecting interest rates to come down before September.

A movement to rein in online pornography is rapidly intensifying, fueled by conservative outrage and growing unease over the accessibility of sexual content online, especially for children. Pornography is mentioned on the first page; banning pornography and locking up those who produce it are proposed on Page 5. He was an occasional guest at Hugh Hefner’s famed Playboy Mansion and made cameos in soft-core pornographic films produced by the company – though not in any scenes depicting sexual content or nudity. ‘Sex is the canary in the coal mine’The Supreme Court has deemed previous attempts to curb online pornography unconstitutional on First Amendment grounds. They were designed to protect adults from accessing adult content, which, of course, is their stated aim.

As stocks from a variety of sectors saw gains on Wednesday, CNBC's Jim Cramer examined what he believes is a multi-faceted bull market. "This market feels almost blasphemous to me because we're being led by an outrageously bullish combination of stocks, the kind of stocks that absolutely should not be going higher at the same time," he said. Cramer suggested that "the stocks leading us higher are supposed to be mutually exclusive," but that's currently not the case. For example, he noted that industrial, utility and tech stocks are going up at the same time. He also said many believe there's an "either-or" market where tech stocks can climb or other groups can.

With the S & P 500 making a fresh all-time high Wednesday morning, it has erased the 6% pullback in short-order. By late March, momentum began to slow, and it became clear that it would take some time to see the next bullish pattern. That means there still has not been a successful bearish pattern (big or small) since last October. If the S & P 500 can't hold this latest push to new highs, then a bullish formation like this could be constructed. The bottom line is this: Strong trends are made from both bullish patterns working and bearish patterns failing.

There's no sense in this, said Gary Kusin, the cofounder of Babbage, the company to which GameStop traces its roots. Imagine if Taylor Swift's brand or company went public, and all the Swifties bought stock, the shares would be overvalued. What Wall Street doesn't understand is that there are Swifties in the video game industry. "If I worked on Wall Street, I would find some other stocks and some other places to go; I wouldn't touch GameStop." And I believe that's exactly what's ailing Wall Street right now," Kusin said.

Dell is seeing accelerating momentum, especially in winning business to build AI servers, unlocking a new bull case for the stock, Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring wrote in a note on Wednesday. "All-in, we are hearing about more AI server momentum at Dell than at any other OEM," Woodring wrote, saying that he expected about $10 billion of AI server revenue in the company's fiscal 2025 — ending next February. Most AI servers are built around Nvidia's chips which have become prized in the technology industry because they are used to build and deploy advanced AI models from companies like Google , OpenAI and Meta . Dell sells servers using the newest Nvidia AI chips, including its H100 GPU and the latest Blackwell-generation chips. But the PC industry is on course to grow again and is outperforming lowered expectations, Woodring wrote, which will benefit Dell.

Market gurus like Jim Chanos and Larry McDonald aren't convinced by the Reddit-fueled rally, though. AdvertisementGameStop and other big-name "meme stocks" kept rising ahead of Tuesday's opening bell — but some of the best-known voices in the market are highly skeptical about the rally. AMC, BlackBerry, and several other meme stocks — notable for their popularity on retail investing forums such as Reddit's r/WallStreetBets — also racked up major gains in early-morning trading.

Meme stocks are having a moment, but the broader market is rallying as well. While GameStop's 74% rally got a lot of attention Monday ( "meme stocks are back!" ), the evidence indicates that a broad rally is dragging up a lot of stuff that hasn't been performing well this year. The S & P 600 Small Cap advance/decline is also near the highest levels since December, while the S & P Mid Cap 400 advance/decline line is at a new high. So when you hear the tired old refrain, "meme stocks are back," take a look at the rest of the market.

Despite a stock market that's less than 1% away from record highs, bearish forecasts are out in full force. And a weakening in the labor market will crush investor confidence and send the stock market falling by as much as 30%.
